Cardboard Carousel is an inspiring musical duo comprising of
Richard and Calliopi Dawson.
Drawing from a wide variety of influences, and having international roots, they produce a unique indie/folk sound, centered on hauntingly beautiful melodies & smooth harmonies.
Having played extensively around South East England; and released both an EP and full length album, Cardboard Carousel capture audiences and listeners from the outset. Combining their passion for music and storytelling; their songs and lyrics are both captivating and thought provoking.
This January, Cardboard Carousel return to tour South Africa and share their UK born sound with their home land. This is where Richard and Calliopi met and grew up together, and it is where their love for music began.
For Richard & Calli, this tour will serve as a platform from which to share their music with South African listeners and to create an opportunity to become more involved in community projects & programs; such as spending time with juvenile prisoners in Pollsmoor Prison. Calli and Richard along with an experienced team, hope to use music as therapy to allow these young boys to share their stories, experience love and to become children again.
Emma du Preez
Emma is a singer/songwriter based in Cape Town, South Africa whose brand of post-modern indie-folk is self-aware, smart and emotionally authentic. Pretty, poignant and quirky; her sound has been likened to artists like Suzanne Vega, with an emphasis on lyrical craftsmanship and nostalgic story-telling, and early Jewel, with an intensely emotive vocal delivery and hints of pop-country and bluegrass influences.
Her sound is sweet but her subject matter is real and her delivery has the right amount of wit and self-deprecating humour to steer clear of saccharine. Her live performances showcase a strong stage presence and a huge empathic capacity for connection.
She released her debut EP, The View From Here, recorded with producer Kieran Kelly (Sufjan Stevens, Angus & Julia Stone) in early 2014.
Quaid Lagan, a musician forged from the deep south of Cape Town, has been described as passionate and evocative.
His music is written from the fire of his life experiences and his tenacity in finding beauty in negative spaces making him a raw and unique performer. He has performed extensively since the age of 18 and has a great love and appreciation for the South African music scene, having played in various local bands himself.
His sound is influenced and inspired by a variety genres; including Pop, Folk, Rock, Punk, Reggae and Ska, resulting in a versatile and appealing sound. In his own words, Quaid describes his sound and presence as “Big, Fun and Warm”.
